A record of action from the Liberal Democrats

Investing in education

• Liberal Democrats have chaired the education committee on Essex County Council since 1993
• in that time we have more than doubled the number of nursery places for 3 and 4 year olds in Essex
• under the Conservatives, Essex was near the bottom of the league for spending on education - now we are nearly at the top!

Building prosperity

• Liberal Democrats have chaired the enterprise board on Essex County Council since 1993
• we have attracted cash from Europe to help create jobs for local people
• we initiated the Essex Regeneration Challenge to help bring new life to our town and village centres
• we have campaigned for business rate changes to encourage businesses back into town centres

Caring for the vulnerable

• we intend to keep the County Council's promise to finish upgrading elderly people's residential homes by the year 2001
• we have opposed Conservative plans to deny older people the choice of a council old people's home

A clean and safe environment

• Liberal Democrats have taken a lead in backing public transport in Essex
• we have pushed for better air quality monitoring, and action to improve the air we breathe
• we have continued to encourage recycling
