A record of action from the Liberal Democrats
Investing in education
Liberal Democrats have chaired the education committee on Essex County Council since 1993
in that time we have more than doubled the number of nursery places for 3 and 4 year olds in Essex
under the Conservatives, Essex was near the bottom of the league for spending on education - now we are nearly at the top!
Building prosperity
Liberal Democrats have chaired the enterprise board on Essex County Council since 1993
we have attracted cash from Europe to help create jobs for local people
we initiated the Essex Regeneration Challenge to help bring new life to our town and village centres
we have campaigned for business rate changes to encourage businesses back into town centres
Caring for the vulnerable
we intend to keep the County Council's promise to finish upgrading elderly people's residential homes by the year 2001
we have opposed Conservative plans to deny older people the choice of a council old people's home
A clean and safe environment
Liberal Democrats have taken a lead in backing public transport in Essex
we have pushed for better air quality monitoring, and action to improve the air we breathe
we have continued to encourage recycling
