About Ian

Ian was born in London and spent his first few years living on the High Road Tottenham. His father moved to Harlow in the mid 50's to help establish British Oxygen in Harlow, where they got a house in Rectory Wood. Ian attended Little Parndon School and then Burnt Mill.

Having won an apprenticeship in 1969, Ian went to the Edmonton training school of British Oxygen. During his apprenticeship Ian attended Harlow College. On completion of his training he spent some time at Edmonton, before transferring to BOC in Harlow. This was taken over by Nagretti & Zambra and moved to Templefields.

Ian then moved to Clement Clarke. On being made redundant Ian moved into telecoms and IT.

Ian has been married for 34 years and has two grown up daughters who are both married. He is a senior member of Harlow Jewish Community, and has held the role of Chairman and Vice Chairman over a number of years. Ian is a keen photographer and used to do some semi-pro work in the early 70's.

Why I'm a Liberal Democrat

I grew up with my father being involved in politics for the then Liberal Party, and was involved with the Young Liberals. My father was one of the few Liberal councillors on Harlow Council, representing Tye Green Ward. In recent years I have got involved with the local party, in delivering leaflets and helping out and eventually standing as a candidate for a ward I had no chance of winning.

It was at this point I realised that I could do better - like so many of the local residents, I didn't have a clue who our local councillors were, as we never heard from them or even saw them. With local problems building up, especially the state of the roads and pavements in Netteswell, we started to get involved pushing the council to resolve problems, taking on casework the local councillors were not dealing with and making ourselves known to the residents. So by the time I stood for Netteswell ward I was working hard for my own neighbourhood and the residents, my neighbours.

Current issues

One of the current issues I am trying to work on is my concern over speeding in the area. Netteswell is a 20mph residential scheme, and roads like Maddox Road are treated like speedways by drivers. I am asking Essex County Council if they would paint '20' symbols in the road to help with the traffic calming.

I have been working with the police on the problems of mini motos and other powered vehicles, and we have had a good clear up rate.
