Looking after our town

1. Protecting our green spaces

Liberal Democrats opposed Labour plans for a sport centre in the Town Park. Liberal Democrats value green spaces.

2. Repairing our homes, garages, pavements and landscape

Under Labour, our town is looking shabby and neglected. Harlow residents deserve an efficient council that carries out repairs quickly and effectively.

 Once this was a pavement

3. Recycling as much as we can through doorstep collections

Harlow has one of the lowest rates of recycling in Essex. Liberal Democrats want a full doorstep collection. Being careful with our rents and taxes

4. Cracking down on waste

Liberal Democrat councillors receive frequent examples of council waste under Labour. Harlow deserves better.

Harlow Council Elections 4 May 2000

Vote Liberal Democrat in the local council elections on Thursday 4 May.

Drop us a line or give us a call if you'd like to help or join.

 5. Reducing our council tax and being more efficient

Ian Jackson in Netteswell Residents of Harlow pay by far the highest council tax in Essex - yet has the worst services. Liberal Democrats say: local residents shouldn't have to pay high taxes for poor quality.

6. Working together with local organisations and businesses

Unlike Labour, we believe the council needn't do everything itself. There is a place for working in partnership.

Listening to local people

7. Keeping in touch with residents and respecting your views

 Emma Smith listens

Many local people say Labour has become arrogant and remote. Liberal Democrats work hard all year round and keep in touch.

8. Making the council more open and accessible

It's ridiculous that the council's neighbourhood offices and many departments are shut for part of the working week and can't even be reached on the phone. Liberal Democrats believe the council should be accessible to the local people it is meant to serve. Robert Thurston making sure YOU know what is going on

9. Improving local democracy by setting up parish councils instead of Area Committees

Labour want you to believe parish councils are expensive and bureaucratic. In fact, the opposite is true. Other parts of Essex with parish councils pay much less council tax and can hold the politicians to account. We think it's worth trying to see if it would work here.

And above all

We always remember that it’s YOUR money, YOUR town, YOUR Council.
