HLPS is Harlow Liberal Democrats' Printing Society, providing services to Liberal Democrats and other local organisations in Harlow and surrounding areas in Essex and Hertfordshire (UK).
We can print on paper and light card from very small up to A3 sizes, single or double sided. We can print with black, blue and orange ink, on white or coloured paper - most paper colours are available to order. We can also print posters. We usually have Arc Chrome poster paper in stock.
We can enlarge or reduce from your artwork, print two-up and cut, and fold. Photographs should not be screened in advance as our machine screens them automatically. The original photographs may be in colour or black and white, though the latter gives the best results.
If you do not want A4 or A3, we can cut the paper to any size up to A3, but to avoid waste it is best to use metric sizes (A3, A4, A5 or A6), except for posters. For posters, we currently cut down from 510mm x 715mm paper (otherwise known as 20" x 30"). We can print posters up to 10" x 10".
We can print from your computer artwork if you can generate a PDF file using Adobe Acrobat or a similar program.
If agreed at the time of the order, we may be able to print from your artwork for you to collect later the same day.
A special service we offer is to provide your leaflets already counted into the numbers needed for each street - just give us a street list with your order.
We also have a Folding Machine, capable of folding A3 and A4 paper in V, U, W and Z folds, so we can provide your leaflets counted and folded, ready for you to give straight to your deliverers.
For a fee, we can design your FOCUS or other leaflets.
Please contact our designer Lorna Spenceley to discuss this.
HLPS was founded in 1974 - one of the first Liberal printing societies. Initially it had an old Gestetner litho machine (a Gestetner 211 bought for £150). This printed several million copies before being replaced by a newer Gestetner 319.
HLPS's original one-page constitution was published in Tony Hill's guide to Liberal Printing Societies, and formed the model for a number of others - it remained unchanged until 1996 (either version available on request).
HLPS printed for every election from October 1974 to 1987, but then fell into decline due to lack of a suitable place to run the press, and of people who still had time to run it. During most of the 1990's, the 319 litho machine sat unused in a dry garage (it still is - anyone interested?), and only laser printing was done.
In 1996 the society was reactivated, when we bought a Riso TR1510 digital printing machine, and Nick Macy took over as manager. The Riso could run off A4 at 100 copies a minute: the same speed as the litho machine on a good day, but without the half hour setup and hour cleaning down afterwards! Now it's simply "Turn on, Print out, Turn off".
In September 1998 we traded in the 1510 for a Riso GR3710 A3 machine. This enables us to print A3 leaflets, and also posters up to about 10" x 10". The print quality is also higher, especially where we are able to print from a digital original over the Riso computer interface.
The GR3710 was funded with the help of Harlow and Saffron Walden local parties.
In April 2000, we purchased two extra colour drums, allowing us to print in Blue and "Liberal Democrat Orange" as well as the original black.
In July 2000 we purchased an A3 folding machine.
