Former Liberal Democrat Councillor Su Lawton and local resident Mr. Khan handed in a letter to the Council's Chief Executive and Returning Officer this morning, demanding a by-election be held in Staple Tye ward, following the announcement of a "casual vacancy" in the ward caused by Cllr David Kirton not having attended any Council meetings since 11 September 2008.

Staple Tye has been without effective service from Cllr Kirton for 6 months, because he has been in prison on remand, charged with serious sexual offences. Kirton was elected as a Conservative in May 2008.

UPDATE:The Returning Officer has now confirmed that "the requisite two requests for a by-election have been received".

The By-Election will be held on 30 April 2009.
