Conservative council leader Andrew Johnson has been urged to ensure the future of Harlow Museum against the background of recent cuts to council services.
The museum, located in a historic property in Mark Hall, tells the story of the Harlow area from ancient times to the modern day.
Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman Dave White has written to the council leader to ask what his plans for the museum are and to guarantee its future existence.
Mr White decided to write his letter after being approached by a number of local residents concerned for the Museum's future.
Mr White said:
"Harlow Museum is at the centre of our local cultural life, It is vital that it remains open for future generations.
Local people are scared by the ongoing rounds of cuts from the Conservative Council. As the main opposition in Harlow it is the Liberal Democrats' responsibility to hold them to account on this issue."
