Spenceley Welcomes Fee Protest
Marchers to Harlow
Harlow Liberal Democrat leader
Lorna Spenceley yesterday (Sunday 25 January) welcomed a group
of students marching from Cambridge to London in protest against
the Governments plans for university top-up
fees.
The three students Natalie
Sedacca, Sam Caldwell and Dan Meyer set out from Cambridge
at the end of last week, and arrived in Harlow late on Sunday
afternoon. The students were met at Harlow Station by Mrs Spenceley
and Sal Brinton, Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for
Watford.
The students were due to walk
from Harlow to Tottenham on Monday, and arrive at Westminster
in time for the debate in Parliament on Tuesday. Their journey
has been covered in the press and broadcast media.
Mrs Spenceley said:
"The Government must scrap
its plans to introduce top-up fees plans which break the
clear promise Labour made at the last election.
If the Government persists,
thousands of students like Natalie, Sam and Dan will leave university
saddled with mortgage-sized debts, and many young people from
poorer backgrounds will be put off going to university altogether.
Instead, the Government
should guarantee free tuition for all who are qualified, and
restore maintenance grants of up to £2,000 for the least
well off students.
